No Impactman Still needs help

To the two people out there who read this....

No Impact Man, aka Colin Beaven is still looking for e-mails of support. I tried to do the thing where I link my blog to his, but I'm technologically challenged so I'm just cutting and pasting...

The deadline is fast approaching,
but I'm still hoping for more emails of support for
my meeting with Representative Nadler on Friday
afternoon. As you know, I will be asking him to help
steer the country towards meaningful climate policy.

Now, onwards...

I'm Moving

I still can't really rap my head around that, and I'm still not really clear on what it is I'm doing. Seriously people, the last time I moved I was in third grade. That was 17 years ago. Honestly who moves out of their parents house for the first time at the age of 25. I'm like that chick in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, except I'm not getting married. When I told them I was going to start looking they both said the same thing. "Why?" That was quickly followed by my mom's over dramatic, "Why would you do this to me?".
So here I am, about to start my own life with the A and suddenly I'm faced with the realization that I can do all those things I said I would do "one day." I can eat healthy meals, maybe go vegetarian. I can use safe house-hold cleaners I can be in a place that isn't centered around a TV. I can make sure all the lights stay off. I'm even thinking about riding a bike to the grocery store. (I don't have a bike, but one day). So I guess the challenge is that now I have no excuses not to do the things I've I wished I could do.
I read something that Jerry wrote not to long ago about always walking through charted territory. I guess this is me stepping off the path.

Help the No Impact Man

Hey guys,

Colin, aka No Impact Man, has a great post today: We can really make a difference. TODAY. But I need your help. Plus I have some free Reverend Billy DVDs to give away.

He is trying to collect 350 (or 3500) e-mails to send to his local congressman and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosci. Go to his cite to get the whole scoop, but this is what I feel is the most imprortant thing he is asking for:

"Introduce, as soon as possible, a non-binding resolution to
the House of Representatives asserting that we need a
climate change mitigation policy with a goal of no more
than 350 ppm of atmospheric carbon dioxide
(read why here)."

He is also offering to give away a free copy of the "What Would Jesus Buy" DVD.
Personally, let me just say that I have seen "Rev. Billy" on a few news programs
talking about his "mission" and I am not a fan. I agree with the concept, I agree that I don't think our ultra cunsumorism is good, but I just don't like the way he is going about spreading his "message". That aside, don't let that stop you from sending in your e-mail.

Mother -Daughter Bonding

Me: Jill called and was asking about when I'm packing. I told her that Saturday I had to go and get Alex from her sleep over at the zoo and she got all up set. "Why do you have to pick her up from there?" Then after a while she said, "Well I guess it won't take us that long."

Alex: What does she mean, "US"?

Me: Excatly!

Harry Potter News

New cover art was released today by Scholastic in honor of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's 10th Anniversary.
The collector in me wants to go out and buy the new book just to have a copy of the new cover, even though I have 2 copies (hardback and paperback) of the book already. So in the name of sanity and smart consumption of resources, I am just going to post the picture here.
Now, if I ever get the chance to go to England I would still fulfill my dream of picking up a copy of the "Philosopher's Stone" (as the book was originally titled). I think that would be a very cool thing to have on my bookshelf. Of course, I would have to read it and compare to see what, if any, words are different in the original English version versus its American translation.

Christal Skulls

So Sunday night Alex and I started watching this documentary on the Sci-fi Channel about the legend of the Christal Skulls (which coincidentally is the topic of the new Indian Jones movie). The researchers have looked into all sorts of different theories about where these skulls come from and what they REALLY are. Because of course, we all know they these are not just skulls that someone made out of Christal just to put on their bookshelves and look at.

First of all these are Mayan things. Meaning old. Anytime something really well done is found in an ancient civilization people always wonder "how did they do it?". We all know that its impossible to make anything perfect with out modern machines. And you also have to remember that these people weren't as smart as us so they couldn't have invented their own way of making the crystal they found (in river banks) so clear and smooth. No, they were GIVEN to the Mayans by aliens. Yes, that's right. Aliens whose own planet was being destroyed (al la Superman's Krypton) gave these skulls to the Mayans. We know this because if you look real close at them, the guy in the documentary can see images, some of which look like aliens. Oh, and by the way, that also explains crop circles. (Don't worry, I don't get it either.)

Apparently there are 13 of these things, but we only have 3 so we need to find the other 10. To do that the research team (lead by the grandson of the women who had one skull and the grandson of the guy who helped her find that one) went to look for old temples where the missing skulls might be. It is at this point we learn that these things might have been a part of the city of Atlantis. Yes, Atlantis might have be the explanation for the Bermuda Triangle. (Are you following this?) And the skulls might have been brought to the Mayans for safe keeping after the city was swallowed by the ocean. Confused? I was. Apparently all we know about Atlantis is that it was "in the Atlantic" so why not off the cost of Bolivia? Why assume it was close to Greece where Plato recorded its existence? Plato could have known about the Americas. It isn't a TOTAL stretch.

At this point I'm waiting for these skulls to be blamed for the Kennedy assassination and the magic bullet. Sadly, it's 9:00 and time for Alex to go to bed. I guess I'll never get to find out what happens next.

I am back to the question I have never had an answer for: What do I want to do with my life?

Of course, I do know the answer to this question. I want to be a mom to my daughter and spend as much time with her as possible. I want to express myself creatively through art and poetry, I want to be spiritually disciplined and I want to help my friends and my community.

The problem with that answer though, is that there is no money to be had by doing those things. I'm not the kind of person who cares about having a fancy cars or a great big mansion. I do, however, have debut that needs to be repaid (student loans, car payments, medical) and expenses that make living comfortable (rent, food, electricity, etc.). In short, if I could live on nothing and spend my days doing art and writing I would. But I can't. At least not right now.

So what do I do in the meantime?

Honestly I'm open for any and all suggestions.

nature's voice

growling buses
impatient horns
and crying sirens

conspire
to drown out
the water that falls
in the fountain near by.

there are people
all around
some are rushing
by those waiting
patiently in lines

no one says
a single word.

the trees are moving
leaves sway in the wind
but the rustling has vanished.

where is the
howl of the wind?

all this silence
in the noise has
scared me awake.

from those wild teasing flowers
in all their lovely dresses
to the deep mahogany
sheen of the roaches
i'm learning how to hear
her voice again.

Pajama Fins

Some times its just a PJ and hot pink fins kind of day! Photo by, Katy 2008

Alex: You know, Grandpa is nice when he isn't talking.
Me: I agree.
Alex: Do you think he knows that?
Me: I don't.
Alex: You should tell him.
Me: Why don't you?
Alex: Next time he's talking I'm going to tell him my ears are bleeding.

(If you don't know my dad this probably sounds mean, not funny. And while it probably is mean, if you don't know my dad, you can not appreciate how painful it can be to listen to him talk. Therefore, if you do know the man, you are probably rolling on the floor like I was.)
